Without local support, some students would not receive a weekly food pack, and no students would receive holiday packs that go out during the four major long breaks during the year, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break, and Summer. Transylvania County, despite its natural beauty and close-knit community, faces a pressing challenge–Many of our students go to bed hungry. 

      Numerous children in our schools come from low-income families, and they rely heavily on the free or reduced-price meals they receive at school. Unfortunately, breaks from school pose a gap in their access to nutritious food, which can significantly impact their overall well-being and academic performance.
     The Backpack Buddies Program aims to bridge this gap by providing eligible students with “backpacks” filled with nutritious, non-perishable food items to sustain them over the school breaks.

The Back Pack Buddies Program is now in its 16th year of operations. The program is coordinated by the Transylvania County Schools School Nutrition Services.
